The scholarship window will open for students to apply starting January 30. 

The deadline to submit your completed application is March 1 (5:00pm).

The Jerry and Esther Moran Scholarship has been established to create change and inspire students’ dreams of attending college. Our vision is to empower young people with limited financial resources, and from all backgrounds, to access more opportunities, reach their potential, determine their own careers and futures, and contribute to all aspects of their life and community.

Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school students with high financial need, a commitment to serving others, demonstrated academic achievement, strength of character, and leadership qualities. Students of color, women, LGBTQ+, and other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

This scholarship will award 1 new scholarship each year. Awards for students entering 2-year colleges will be $5,000 each and awards for students entering 4-year colleges will be $10,000 each. Awards can cover educational costs including tuition, fees, books, and supplies. 



Eligibility Criteria: To apply, applicants must:

  • Be graduating seniors at Oakland Tech or McClymonds High Schools in Oakland, CA
  • Have high financial need (proof of Free & Reduced Lunch eligibility)
  • Be attending 2- or 4-year university in the upcoming Fall term
  • Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5

Selection Criteria: Winners will be selected by a committee based on the following:

  • Financial need (based on Expected Family Contribution from FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application)
  • First-generation college students, women, LGBTQ+, and members of other underrepresented groups may receive preference
  • Academic achievement, strength of character, community service, commitment to educational success as demonstrated in Written and Video responses 
  • Letter of recommendation: one recommendation from a non-relative, such as a teacher, coach, supervisor, religious leader, etc.

Tasks that can be started early

  1. Confirm 1 adult (non-relative) who can provide a brief recommendation for you. The adult can be a teacher, coach, work supervisor, religious leader, etc.
  2. FAFSA or California Dream Act Application: You will need to apply to one of these and then upload the Report that you get back that shows your Expected Family Contribution amount to your application. If you need help with this, see your college counselor at your high school.


Award announcements will be made via email no later than May 1. Please frequent the email you used to create your account for email notifications.
